"Foreshadowing the Cross"

The language of the Scripture quotes has been modernised for easier understanding.

Isaiah 53

1 Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground. He has no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no [physical] beauty that we should desire Him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He opens not His mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare His generation? For He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was He stricken. 9 And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death; because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief: when you shall make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall My righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He has poured out His soul to death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Matthew 16

13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?" 14 And they said, "Some say that you are John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." 15 He says to them, "But whom say you that I am?" 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but My Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also to you, That you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

20 Then charged He his disciples that they should tell no man that He was Jesus the Christ. 21 From that time forth began Jesus to show to His disciples, how that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

22 Then Peter took Him, and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Be it far from You, Lord: this shall not be to You." 23 But He turned, and said to Peter, "Get you behind Me, Satan: you are an offence to Me: for you savour [understand] not the things that be of God, but those that be of men."

24 Then said Jesus to His disciples, "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: and whoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works."

28 "Verily I say to you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in His kingdom."

Mark 8

27 And Jesus went out, and His disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way He asked His disciples, saying to them, "Whom do men say that I am?" 28 And they answered, "John the Baptist: but some say, Elijah; and others, One of the prophets."

29 And He says to them, "But whom say you that I am?"

And Peter answers and says to him, "You are the Christ."

30 And He charged them that they should tell no man of Him. 31 And He began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And He spoke that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke Him. 33 But when He had turned about and looked on His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, "Get you behind Me, Satan: for you savour not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men."

34 And when He had called the people to Him with His disciples also, He said to them, "Whoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever will save his life shall lose it; but whoever shall lose his life for My sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it."

36 "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

38 Whoever therefore shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

Luke 9

18 And it came to pass, as He was alone praying, His disciples were with Him: and He asked them, saying, "Whom say the people that I am?" 19 They answering said, "John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again." 20 He said to them, "But whom say you that I am?" Peter answering said, "The Christ of God."

21 And He straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; 22 saying, "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day."

23 And He said to them all, "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: but whoever will lose his life for My sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whoever shall be ashamed of Me and of My words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He shall come in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels."

27 "But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God."
