Scriptures for Volume Twenty-four

"Leaven"

The language of the Scripture quotes has been modernised for easier understanding.

Matthew 15

21 Then Jesus went there, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried to Him, saying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, You son of David [she believed!]; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil."

23 But He answered her not a word.

And His disciples came and besought Him, saying, "Send her away; for she cries after us." 24 But He answered and said, "I am not sent but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 Then came she and worshipped Him, saying, "Lord, help me." 26 But He answered and said, "It is not meet [fit] to take the children's bread, and cast it to dogs." 27 And she said, "Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith: be it to you even as you will." And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

29 And Jesus departed from there, and came near to the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there. 30 And great multitudes [of non-Jews] came to Him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and He healed them: 31 insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel [not Jesus].

32 Then Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, "I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with Me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way." 33 And His disciples said to him, "From where should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?"

34 And Jesus says to them, "How many loaves have you?" And they said, "Seven, and a few little fishes." 35 And He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. 36 And He took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and broke them, and gave to His disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.

38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.

39 And He sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

Matthew 16

1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that He would show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered and said to them, "When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather: for the sky is red’. 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today: for the sky is red and lowering’. O you hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky; but can you not discern the signs of the times? 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah." And He left them, and departed.

5 And when His disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees." 7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have taken no bread." 8 Which when Jesus perceived, He said to them, "O you of little faith, why reason you among yourselves, because you have brought no bread? 9 Do you not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand [Jews], and how many baskets you took up? 10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand [non-Jews], and how many baskets you took up? 11 How is it that you do not understand that I spoke it not to you concerning bread, that you should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?"

12 Then understood they how that He bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?" 14 And they said, "Some say that You are John the Baptist [come back from the grave]: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."

15 He says to them, "But whom say you that I am?" 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but My Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also to you, That you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

19 "And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

20 Then charged He His disciples that they should tell no man that He was Jesus the Christ [the sent of God].

21 From that time forth began Jesus to show to His disciples, how that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22 Then Peter took Him [laid hands on Him], and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Be it far from You, Lord: this shall not be to You."

23 But He turned, and said to Peter, "Get you behind Me, Satan: you are an offence to Me: for you savour [enjoy] not the things that be of God, but those that be of men."

24 Then said Jesus to His disciples, "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: and whoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works."

28 "Verily I say to you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in His kingdom."

Mark 7

24 And from there He arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into a house, and would have no man know it: but He could not be hid. 25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of Him, and came and fell at His feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought Him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

27 But Jesus said to her, "Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to the dogs." 28 And she answered and said to Him, "Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs." 29 And He said to her, "For this saying go your way; the devil is gone out of your daughter." 30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed [sleeping peacefully].

31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, He came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. 32 And they bring to Him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech Him to put His hand upon him. 33 And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; 34 and looking up to heaven, He sighed, and says to him, "Ephphatha", that is, "Be opened." 35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plain.

36 And He charged them that they should tell no man: but the more He charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; 37 and were beyond measure astonished, saying, "He has done all things well: He makes both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak."

Mark 8

1 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him, and says to them, 2 "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat: 3 and if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for many of them came from far."

4 And His disciples answered Him, "From where can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?" 5 And He asked them, "How many loaves have you?" And they said, "Seven." 6 And He commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and He took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and broke, and gave to His disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

7 And they had a few small fishes: and [these] He blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. 8 So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. 9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and He sent them away.

10 And straightway He entered into a ship with His disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. 11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with Him, seeking of Him a sign from heaven, tempting [testing] Him. 12 And He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, "Why does this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say to you, There shall no sign be given to this generation." 13 And He left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.

14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. 15 And He charged them, saying, "Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod." 16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have no bread."

17 And when Jesus knew it, He says to them, "Why reason you, because you have no bread? Perceive you not yet, neither understand? Have you yet hardened your heart? 18 Having eyes, see you not? And having ears, hear you not? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took you up?"

They say to Him, "Twelve."

20 "And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took you up?" And they said, "Seven."

21 And He said to them, "How is it that you do not understand?"

Luke 9

18 And it came to pass, as He was alone praying, His disciples were with Him: and He asked them, saying, "Whom say the people that I am?" 19 They answering said, "John the Baptist; but some say, ‘Elijah’; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again."

20 He said to them, "But whom say you that I am?" Peter answering said, "The Christ of God." 21 And He straitly [urgently] charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing [each should find for themselves]; 22 saying, "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day."

23 And He said to them all, "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: but whoever will lose his life for My sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whoever shall be ashamed of Me and of My words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He shall come in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels."

27 "But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God."
