"Resting in Faith"

The language of the Scripture quotes has been modernised for easier understanding.

Matthew 8

23 And when He was entered into a ship, His disciples followed Him.

24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but He was asleep. 25 And His disciples came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, "Lord, save us: we perish."

26 And He says to them, "Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?"

Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27 But the men marvelled, saying, "What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him!"

28 And when He was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. 29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, "What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Are You come here to torment us before the time?"

30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. 31 So the devils besought Him, saying, "If You cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine." 32 And He said to them, "Go." And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.

33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils. 34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.

Matthew 9

18 While He spoke these things to them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped Him, saying, "My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay Your hand upon her, and she shall live." 19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did His disciples.

20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood [for] twelve years, came behind Him, and touched the hem of His garment: 21 For she said within herself, "If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole." 22 But Jesus turned Him about, and when He saw her, He said, "Daughter, be of good comfort; your faith has made you whole." And the woman was made whole from that hour.

23 And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the [funeral] people making a noise, 24 He said to them, "Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleeps." And they laughed Him to scorn.

25 But when the people were put forth, He went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. 26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

Mark 4

35 And the same day, when the even was come, He said to them, "Let us pass over to the other side [of the lake]." 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took Him even as He was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.

37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full [of water]. 38 And He was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow [a canvas bag]: and they awoke Him, and said to Him, "Master, care You not that we perish?"

39 And He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still." And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?" 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, "What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"

Mark 5

1 And they came over to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. 2 And when He was come out of the ship, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind [restrain] him, no, not with chains: 4 because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped Him, 7 and cried with a loud voice, and said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, You Son of the most high God? I adjure You by God, that You torment me not." 8 For He said to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit."

9 And He asked him, "What is your name?" And he answered, saying, "My name is Legion: for we are many." 10 And he [the spirit] besought Him much that He would not send them away out of the country.

11 Now there was there near to the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. 12 And all the devils besought Him, saying, "Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them." 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. 15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. 16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. 17 And they began to pray [ask] Him to depart out of their coasts.

18 And when He was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with Him. 19 Howbeit Jesus suffered [allowed] him not, but said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you." 20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis [the ten cities area] how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship to the other side, much people gathered to Him: and He was near to the sea. 22 And, behold, there comes one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw Him, he fell at His feet, 23 and besought Him greatly [earnestly], saying, "My little daughter lies at the point of death: I pray You, come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live."

24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed Him, and thronged Him. 25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, 26 and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27 when she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched His garment. 28 For she said, "If I may touch but His clothes, I shall be whole." 29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that [healing] virtue had gone out of Him, turned Him about in the press, and said, "Who touched My clothes?" 31 And His disciples said to Him, "You see the multitude thronging You, and say You, ‘Who touched me?’"

32 And He looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth. 34 And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you whole; go in peace, and be whole of your plague."

35 While He yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, "Your daughter is dead: why trouble you the Master any further?" 36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Be not afraid, only believe."

37 And He suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. 38 And He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. 39 And when He was come in, He says to them, "Why make you this ado, and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleeps." 40 And they laughed Him to scorn. But when He had put them all out, He took the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with Him, and entered in where the damsel was lying.

41 And He took the damsel by the hand, and said to her, "Talitha cumi"; which is, being interpreted, "Damsel, I say to you, arise." 42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

5:43 And He charged them straitly [earnestly] that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

Luke 8

22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that He went into a ship with His disciples: and He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." And they launched forth. 23 But as they sailed He fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.

24 And they came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, "Master, master, we perish." Then He arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 And He said to them, "Where is your faith?" And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, "What manner of man is this! For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him."

26 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. 27 And when He went forth to land, there met Him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and wore no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, You Son of God most high? I beseech You, torment me not." 29 (For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he broke the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

30 And Jesus asked him, saying, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion": because many devils were entered into him. 31 And they besought Him that He would not command them to go out into the deep.

32 And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought Him that He would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered [allowed] them. 33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed. 37 Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought Him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and He went up into the ship, and returned back again. 38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought Him that he might be with Him: but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 "Return to your own house, and show how great things God has done to you."

And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done to him. 40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned [some months later], the people gladly received Him: for they were all waiting for Him.

41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought Him that He would come into his house: 42 for he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay dying.

But as He went the people thronged Him. 43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 44 came behind Him, and touched the border of His garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. 45 And Jesus said, "Who touched Me?" When all denied, Peter and they that were with Him said, "Master, the multitude throng You and press You, and say You, ‘Who touched me?’

46 And Jesus said, "Somebody has touched Me [with the touch of faith]: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of Me." 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before Him, she declared to Him before all the people for what cause she had touched Him, and how she was healed immediately. 48 And He said to her, "Daughter, be of good comfort: your faith has made you whole; go in peace."

49 While He yet spoke, there comes one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, "Your daughter is dead; trouble not the Master [any longer]." 50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, "Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole."

51 And when He came into the house, He suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. 52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but He said, "Weep not; she is not dead, but sleeps." 53 And they laughed Him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. 54 And He put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, "Maid, arise." 55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and He commanded to give her meat [something to eat].

56 And her parents were astonished: but He charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
